“That which does not kill us only makes us stronger.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
I guess this is it. The dream season that the Washington Capitals had in 2009-2010…. it has come to an unexpected and abrupt end. All the glory of the regular season, all the success, all of the comebacks, the Presidents’ Trophy…. for nothing, thanks to a young Slovakian goaltender.
I will not rant about what happened. Plenty of people have done that already. The game is behind us. Let us look forward, to the future.
Where do we go from here? I think that this post season will have changes, yes, but only adjustments; nothing major. This team has had success, and has possibly the most talent and skill of any NHL roster today. This team didn’t lose because it was worse than Montreal. Something about how this team plays its game backfired, and that will have to be fixed for next season.
The 2010-2011 preseason starts in September. Training camp is in August. The draft and the awards ceremony is in July. For now, let us take a step back.
Musings of a Caps Fan will continue the “Playoff Notebook” section until the playoffs are over. I also plan to shift some focus to our slightly more successful minor league franchise, the AHL’s Hershey Bears. They’re looking for their AHL record 11th Calder Cup. Other than that…. I’ll have analysis, editorials… don’t worry.
This year is a failure, straight and simple. It wasn’t a bad year, but it was a failure. I hope, and I believe, that the Capitals team will rise from the ashes of this burnout and have yet another dominant season next year, hopefully cumulating in that shiny silver chalice that has, for another year, eluded the Washington Capitals.
It’s been a great season, and an exciting one. Let’s hope next year is even better. And let’s hope next year doesn’t end earlier than the middle of June.
