As the Washington Capitals, your 2010 Presidents’ Trophy Winners, start to get all healthy and prepared for the playoffs, numerous players are still looking for individual records and career highs. A game against the eliminated-from-playoff-contention and generally mediocre Atlanta Thrashers might be just what they need. A team with no playoff aspirations, nothing to play for, and that will be hitting up the golf courses starting Sunday…. talk about a perfect game.

The Capitals have gone 5-0-0 against Atlanta this season…. prepare the brooms.

Some Thoughts…..

  • The Washington Capitals will have a short ceremony before the opening faceoff in which NHL Deputy Commissioner, Bill Daly, will present Alexander Ovechkin the Presidents’ Trophy on center ice.
  • Hopefully CSNWashington will be broadcasting this…. so if your watching on TV, tune in earlier than 7PM.
  • Also, I hope that this is only the first trophy celebration on center ice at Verizon Center this year….. if you know what I mean.
  • Meanwhile, on the Rocket Richard and Art Ross Trophy fronts….
  • Alexander Ovechkin is 1 goal behind Sidney Crosby for the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, given to the NHL’s top goal scorer. Ovie is tied with Steven Stamkos of Tampa Bay with 48 goals; Crosby has 49.
  • Alexander Ovechkin is 2 points behind Henrik Sedin, of Vancouver, for the Art Ross Trophy, given to the NHL’s top points (goals & assists) scorer. Sidney Crosby is 2 points behind Ovie with 104, Ovie has 106, and Sedin 108. Nicklas Backstrom is fourth in that race, with 98 points.
  • It is important to note that Ovechkin has played about 10 games less than any of the other leaders; he also was ejected from a few games in the 1st period.
  • Nicklas Backstrom is 2 points from getting 100 points this season…. a monumental achievement. Hell, in Pittsburgh, they started chanting “MVP” when Crosby hit 100 on Tuesday. Its that big.
  • Alexander Semin is 1 goal away from 40 for the season, another huge achievement. Semin has already set a career high for goals and points….. next year looks like it will be big for the Other Alex, should he stay healthy and consistent. Quite possibly, it will be his name on the Rocket Richard next summer…. pure speculation, of course. But, Semin does have that kind of talent.
  • What more must Mike Green do? 2nd-highest +/- rating within the NHL defenseman ranks, only behind his defensive-pairing partner, Jeff Shultz.
  • Also, Green is, again, the highest scoring NHL defenseman.
  • Jose Theodore was chosen to be the Caps’ nominee of the NHL Masterton Trophy, for the player each year who demonstrates the sportsmanship, perseverance, and dedication to the game (via Capitals Insider).
  • Dedication and perseverance? Theodore had his 2-month old son die last September, and he’s had one of, if not the best, season in his career. The last best? 2002; awarded both the Vezina Trophy (for top goalie) and Hart Memorial Trophy (for MVP).

That’s all for now…. the game starts at 7PM in Verizon Center…. for TV watchers, tune in early and maybe you’ll catch the Presidents’ Trophy ceremony.

Enjoy!
